So Rob & I trekked to NYC last night to see Russell Brand perform at the Museo del Barrio... (can you say "Nursery rhyme murals on the walls! Cool beans!" and "No decent restaurants within walking distance!").
Seriously funny man. And pure sex in chelsea boots. Yum.
And they filmed for Comedy Central (now say "Nobody's allowed to pee for the next three hours! Stay in your seats!") There's nothing that makes me want to urinate more than telling me I have no access to a bathroom.
Kind of fun to see how they do the audience shots - as in before Russell even took the stage. "Ok, clap now - wild applause!" "Laugh, huge guffaws please!" "Now laughter into applause!" "Very good, you all get a cookie." (No actual cookies were promised, or received.)
Come to think of it I didn't even get a fortune cookie with my Chinese take-out. I feel somewhat deprived now. But seeing Ol' Russ made up for it.
It was a really fun, and I wanted to stay and meet him afterwards, but the 3 hour drive in the rain with the promise of accreditation wrap up scheduled for today spurred me home. (Shouldn't have bothered - crap meeting. Would have had more fun sleeping in central park and catching pneumonia. But that's another post that will never happen.)
I'd describe the show in more detail, but you might as well watch it when it airs on Comedy Central! Seriously, watch it. You might see me in the sixth row.

Last week got so out of hand I never even managed to post about the Lyle Lovett / John Hiatt show at The Grand. It was (of course) fab, and they played pretty much forever… (That would be 8:15 to around 11pm, with a short break for David Bromberg to do 3 songs in the middle. And yes, that’s how I define “forever.”) The audience was a bit out of hand, lots of talking and even a spontaneous “happy birthday” sing-along for Lyle somewhere towards the end. It’s nice that people show their support, but it must be weird to perform with people trying to start conversations from a darkened audience…
Friday brought the expected yet still traumatic resignation of my boss, who’s moving out to Santa Fe to become executive director at a crisis center… she’ll rock the West, but it’s going to bring much suckage into my work environment (which is already a borderline suck-fest). I balanced out the day by purchasing tix to see Russell Brand in New York on Nov 13th, which makes me happy.
In the meanwhile, the band of the moment is Innerpartysystem. From PA. Who knew?

I guess a couple of week with minimal sleep and extra work coupled with the dust-raising carpet removal and floor sanding is finally kicking my butt. Working at home today, and this is the setup:

Amelia & I did head to NY to see Andrew Bird at the Hiro Ballroom Monday night. I did not lose any shoes on this trip. He played a completely different set from Friday night’s solo show, including oodles of new songs from Noble Beast (January 27th release date – must make a new desktop counter).

So work is insanely busy and stressful right now, and to combat the perpetual perkiness of some of our peers, Amelia and I have founded the Mood Moderation Movement (or the M&M&M). Henceforth, perkiness is only allowable in our office if tempered by chocolate. If nothing else, it's engendered some very creative exchanges with the Education department!
Thankfully the week's been broken up by some A+ extracurricular activities. Firstly, Ariel & I trekked to Philadelphia on Wednesday night to hear Neil Gaiman read a chapter from his new work - The Graveyard Book (go buy it!!!). He's reading a chapter at each stop on the book tour, and you can find them all posted here - [mousecircus.com]
There was some minor grumbling from one person in the crowd about his not doing a signing, but I for one was happy to get an extended reading and the chance to hear him answer a boatload of questions from the audience. Isn't that better than standing in line for hours to get to talk to him for 30 seconds? I think so...
And then last night I made the decision to drive to Lehigh University to see Andrew Bird do a solo show. I wasn't sure I should go, because it was the same evening as out annual fundraiser, and Amelia & I are going to see him in NYC on Monday evening anyway... BUT, I'm SOOOO glad I went! He's really amazingly talented, and puts a ton of energy into his shows. Apparently he just finished the new album on Thursday, and he did a couple of new songs as well as a bunch of his older stuff.
So, new Neil Gaiman, new Andrew Bird on the way, another show to look forward to, and one big chunk of work stuff finished. Now if I could just get the voter's guide out, I might be able to breath again! -

This week has been a manic rush to complete projects at work and juggle workmen at home. I got a nice deal on getting the final two bedroom floors sanded and refinished, so... we're halfway there:
In the meanwhile, construction on a car wash three blocks over has disturbed a large underground lair of giant sewer rats who have now invaded the neighborhood. They've left my house alone, but we now seem to have an infestation of drain flies. Like fruit flies, but in the drain. I blame the rats.
So I'm covered in sawdust, being attacked by flies, elbow deep in caustic drain chemicals, and trying to paint Gina's room before they come to sand again. Between all this I need to finish a voter's guide, help with auction displays, and start an annual report.
How much is a one way ticket to Funky Town? -

I just finished the annual household chore of cleaning and waxing the hardwood floors (shiny!). Now when the cats walk across the room, their feet squeak. Yes - actual squeaky noises coming from their little padded toesies!
This morning's rumble sounded something like this:
Thump-thump-thump... squeak! Crash! Kadunk-adunk-adunk... squeak! Thump-thump-thump.
(The crash bit being the two of them slamming into the vertical blinds and the sliding glass doors.)
I may have to start waxing the floors twice a year, just for the sheer entertainment value.

So I haven't seen the Misfits since the Danzig days... I've kinda been avoiding the Jerry Only lineup. But when they joined the Motorhead tour, Miss G and I decided it might just be worth the trek to Philly.
Tickets bought and everything, and suddenly the Misfits drop from the tour? C'mon guys - let the testosterone settle! Now we'll be seeing Motorhead with a bunch of speed/thrash metal bands... not a bad way to spend a Friday evening, but how much more fun would it have been if the Misfits were there?

Hello? If I took the time and trouble to do a Wacom portrait for a wallpaper, I'm probably a fan. Which means I'm likely to be OK with his remarks about Bush being a retarded cowboy. I very likely agree with his ridiculing the Palin's for parading their pregnant daughter and boyfriend (er... "fiance") in front of the press. Especially when her stand on family planning is so the polar opposite of my personal belief in educating teens about sexuality health care issues... And I'm probably not feeling too bad for the Jonas Brothers. If they're 100% behind their personal beliefs about abstinence, then why would they care what a British dandy has to say in jest about their very public persona's? (And on an awards show featuring Britney Spears no less, who once espoused the same abstinence vows before… well, we all know how that ended up!)

Logan 650 professional mat cutter. Took two tries, and after 10 years I still have the skill - no overcuts. Then I read the instructions and realized the new cutters have a guide you can follow - no eye/hand coordination required. Any shmoe can cut a perfect mat. Anyhow, all I need is a reliable, reasonably priced mat and molding supplier, and ye basement frame shoppe will be open for business.
While I was tinkering, I picked up this gourd again. I think it needs more turquoise, and more feathers. Because everything needs more feathers. Maybe I'll finish it this week. -

Because I know it would fascinate my 3 readers, I was going to take a photo of the first tomato I grew in my new house. But before I got my camera, I got hungry.
It was yummy. And if you're any good at visualizing, it was perfectly symmetrical, unblemished, and that shade of red that shows up on the labels of canned tomatoes to try and fool you into thinking they'll have that just picked tomato-ey flavor, even though they've been pummeled into submission by machinery.
In other news, Big Brother was up for the weekend, so I got some quality sibling time. We went to see Tropic Thunder, and I laughed until it hurt. Yes, it's "politically incorrect." It's comedy. We're all human.
And Obama/Biden. I did a little happy dance. And then I kept doing it - all day Saturday. I'm excited about this election all over again.

I can't believe I forgot to include this story in my Iggy post...
So in getting dressed for the trip to NY, I was thinking it was going to be a long day... we were swinging by Buffalo Exchange in Philadelphia with a million t-shirts, and then running around a bit before heading to Metropark. So comfort was my thought... Which to me, means shoes I can ditch at a moments notice. Something akin to going barefoot. Kinda like these:
I threw on a pair of much worn comfy black ballet flats, shorts and a t-shirt and we were off.
At the end of the evening, we leave Terminal 5 and catch a cab back to Penn Station. The driver pulls up right next to a sewer grate... when I stepped out of the cab, my heel got caught in the grate. In one of those slow motion moments you watch from somewhere in the back of your brain, I looked down to see my left shoe teetering on the brink between the grates... and then I watched it slowly disappear into the murk below.
Ok, it wasn't that slow, it just seemed like it. I was not diving down the sewer to recover it. I ended up finding the closest drug store, where the only flip-flops to be found would only fit a 3 year old... so I ended up running around Penn Station at 1 in the morning, and the rest of the way home, wearing slipper socks from the "health and beauty" section.
I promised Amelia when we go back in October I'll wear sturdy boots... -

You know how some artists you go to see live just for fun, but some you go knowing you'll be blown away every time? Andrew Bird goes straight to the top of my list of artists I'll definitely go out of my way to see perform every single chance I get.
I've been waiting to see him ever since Amelia introduced me to his music last year, and we finally got the chance at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia last night (along with the New Pornographers). It was an amazing performance.
After his set was over I slipped downstairs to take a look at the t-shirts, had a really nice chat with the lady behind the counter and a couple of other customers... and when I turned around to go back upstairs, who's standing there but Andrew Bird! Yaay!!! So I actually got to say "hi," have him sign my tote bag, and then I babbled at him incoherently for a minute before running back upstairs to send Amelia down. Luckily he was still there and she got her t-shirt signed... I'd have felt really bad if she'd missed him, since she gave me my first Andrew Bird CD!
So - rickshaw rides in NYC, Iggy Pop, and Andrew Bird... seriously great weekend.

So anyway, Gina & I made the trip to Terminal 5 in NYC last night to see Iggy and the Stooges... (As Anthony said, "shows like that are like Mecca to you people, aren't they?")After exiting Penn Station, getting refreshments and wandering around a bit, we found ourselves having trouble getting a cab... but there were rickshaw drivers aplenty. Whoa! We (happily) landed the most insane driver ever, who whizzed us around NY at breakneck speed, weaving in and out of traffic and dodging red lights like it was some kind of suicide bet. It was freaking expensive, but better than any amusement park thrill ride. Seriously, hook up with a crazy rickshaw dude next time you're in the city!We got to the club and made bets as to when the show would actually start (doors opened at 8pm), with guesses being anywhere between 10 and midnight. They took the stage at 9:30 pm, which was a relief because after two $12 drinks, our happy money was done for, and no matter how entertaining watching club crowds is, after an hour you're ready for something more. Iggy was mad as ever - picture Tigger as a speed freak and that's how much energy the man has. The crowd was pretty tame (seriously, Iggy was the only person in the entire club who did any actual stage diving), but he did manage to coax a bunch of folks on stage for a giant dance party at one point.
Yup, you couldn't ask for more. Well, you could - but you'd be a greedy bastard. -

Yup, paint it all black. This is the lazy version of the blog. I was goofing around with the templates and managed to delete all my links while I was at it... Oh well, we can rebuild it... we can make it better! (Yes, lame Million Dollar Man reference. I'm a dork. And a really old dork at that.)
Now I have to choose between going to the basement to build shelving, or lying around on the sofa watching "Flipping Out." See, I keep missing the episode where Jeff fires Chris. Seriously, I've tried to catch it three times over the last two weeks, and I always end up getting off the sofa and doing something constructive, and when I get back to the TV... it's already happened!
But I feel like tonight just might be the night. There's nothing to make me feel more like gluing my ass to the sofa than a big pile of lumber and a bunch of mesh shelves lying in the middle of the living room floor. -

Who decided that weddings in June were a good idea? That person needs to be wrapped in nylon and silk and dumped in the nearest volcano.
Ninety something degrees and almost 100% humidity in a non-air conditioned venue... beautiful, but when I leave thinking "Should I vomit, or ring out my underwear? Either one could only improve how I feel..." it's just not a good thing.
But congratulations and all that!

There's lots of things you have to consider when buying an older house. There's always lots of work to do, things to fix. I've lived in lots of old places, even some that were purported to be haunted. I've seen some things I can't explain, felt some weirdness... nothing too crazy. And I think Max used to visit Phoebe in my old apartment, but we haven't felt his presence since the move.
Today somebody locked me out of the house. Yup, locked. Out.
I grilled on the deck tonight, and afterwards was running in and out to clean up stuff. The sliding doors in the dining room have to be locked from the inside. And you can't accidentally flip the lock behind you and close the door - it automatically unlocks if you do that (a nice safety feature). Yet when I turned around to come back in, the door wouldn't budge.
At first I thought the lock must be broken, it must be loose and I slammed the door and caused it to slip into the locked position... Ran across to the neighbors, borrowed a cell phone to call the dad, "can you please come and unlock the front door?" 20 minutes later we're standing in my dining room trying to figure out what the heck happened.
The locks in perfect shape. You have to apply a decent amount of pressure to flip in and out of the locked position. Test the safety lock feature... Nope, no way to lock it behind you. Could a cat bounce up and knock it into position? Nope, takes opposable thumbs to get that thing to budge.
I can't explain it. But I'm taking my keys when I grill from now on... -

I bribed Mark to convert a couple of region 2 Russell Brand DVDs into something playable for me so I can amuse myself while I'm having a bunch of work done on the house... (Sometimes you have to laugh while you're kissing all your money goodbye. The alternative involves buying stock in Kleenex, and I'm not savvy enough for the current market.)
So far this month's household extravagences have involved:
- Plumbing - Can you believe someone shoved a RAG down the tub drain at some point? Probably the same brain surgeon that poured plaster down the utility tub in the basement) and a new spigot with shut-off valve for the front of the house.
- Electrician - new circuits and wiring for the
- CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING - that will be going in this week.
And since I can no longer afford to leave my house, and the basement's in no condition for actual painting, I've been driven to the computer once again to indulge my creative impulses. And since I'm watching the DVDs, could there be anything more appropriate than a portrait? The answer is "no."
