New Computer? Yes Sir!

So my old computer was having issues. Bad issues.

The power supply on it was apparently shady, and I was continuously losing hardware pieces one at a time. A few weeks ago my video card went out, then directly after the real disaster struck.

My media drive went bad. This drive holds all my mp3 files, movies, and such. Considering my mp3 collection had grown to somewhere in the 20k range this is quite a loss, but that's not what pisses me off. What really sets me off is it's also where I had my personal photos and such, not only of me, but of all my friends for the past few years.

So Rachel and I decided that enough is enough and went ahead and ordered me a new computer. Here I present you with the specs:

CPU :: Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 (Zalman 9700 CPU Cooler)
Mobo :: Asus Striker Extreme
Video :: XFX 8800GT 512MB DDR3
Memory :: [x4] 1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
HDD :: [x2] WD7500AAKS 750GB HDD
PCU :: Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W
Sound :: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty

This, needless to say, is a considerable upgrade on my previous computer. In fact, it takes my old computer, bends it over, and has its way with it.

I've got it set up now, I took some pictures and will put them up on flickr soon. It runs Crysis and UT3 on Very High settings in 1650x1080 with no noticeable framerate dips. All in all I'm quite happy. Now to work out a good backup solution for the future.

Bedroom Computer

Since my roommate moved out I have the spare room back, and have moved my bed into that room, so I can once again have a room separate of the computer/office stuff. The problem with that is sometimes I really want to see what's the dealy without leaving that room.

I would, at some point, like to make a bedroom computer.

It would need to be able to keep track of the time, obviously, as it's main purpose would be as an alarm clock of sorts. Event planning would be nice too, perhaps using 30 boxes or Google Calendar to keep track of my events. Some sort of RSS/email viewing would be the nift as well. As I mull it over weather would be the cool. In thinking about it I thought it would be a fantastic idea if the computer could wake me up ala Star Trek.

"Good Morning Scottie. The temperature is a cool 96 degrees and 100% humidity in sunny Southern Louisiana. You have work in one hour and 45 minutes. You have 2 events today. There are 5440982 emails awaiting you. There are 30 new items in your RSS archive. The Klingons are on the starboard bow."

With a voice recognition software this could become even more fun, allowing me the ability to give voice commands such as "Set alarm for 8:30 PM" or "Play me some John Tesh baby!".

Add in X-10 type devices like usb light and device control and there are no limits to the fun one could have.

"Computer, run Barry White.exe"

Been a longer while...

Since the last time I blogged so much has happened that it would really be pointless to try to put it all down here. My computer bit the dust finally and as of now I am working on a semi-functional box donated by a lot of friends so I can get back to work.

Thanks a plenty go out to Chris, Odessa, Julie and Bobby for hooking me up with the parts I needed. Hopefully with the newly functional box I can get back to work and maybe, just maybe, even post here every so often.

AFK

So as a lot of you have noticed judging by my emails and answering machine I've been away a bit. Nothing is wrong really it's just been a harsh couple of weeks and my grandmother is coming down for my mother's graduation and she'll be staying in my house so there has been some sorting going on there.

Most of the reason for my extended afk however revolves directly around my computer. It's on it's last legs I'm assuming and doesn't want to have anything to do with me anymore. The mouse has stopped working correctly (it freezes for several moments any time you try to move it after it's been stopped), one of the monitors is going, and it's crashing randomly. Formatting again took care of the random crashing but strangely enough the mouse problem remains.

Thankfully Odessa is attempting to ride to the rescue by purchasing me a power supply from my amazon wishlist as an early birthday present (which thanks to tiger direct shipping likely won't arrive till well after my birthday) which will hopefully be the only thing needed to fix my pentium 4 box that UPS used for soccer practice when I shipped it here from Cali.

If that works I'll likely be back here daily as before. If not I'ma keep trying to get a functional computer or laptop here so I can use the comp without wanting to throw it out the window.
