Last night at work...

Yesterday was a particularly bad day at work as my day depends a lot on what the people on the shift before me get done. I had left two shifts with 1 pallet of things to put out and the manager gave them a list of things to do... They didn't finish the pallet and only managed to get two things checked off the list between the 3 of them. Two things that it would have taken me 15 minutes to do if both of my hands were broken and I had to go check the list every 30 seconds to remember what I was supposed to be doing. Added on to that I had my own items to do which should, by all rights, have taken me all night.

It still ended up being an ok night. I suppose it's a bit of a pride thing but I enjoy being able to prove what I can do, and last night was all the proof anyone should need for a while. I managed to do all my workload, finish all the items on the list the shift before me was supposed to do, unload my truck, set up some new displays, and still found time to have an excellent conversation with my sister on our lunch break about her stress levels from the job.

All in all a very productive night. I was a little bothered by one of the morning shift people saying they wouldn't help me unload the morning truck because "it wasn't his job". It was a bit of a let down after spending the night doing everyones job for them, but I just moved on with the day. The unfortunate thing about this is that this same person is someone they are thinking of moving to my shift to double the work crew overnight. I have scheduled a sit down with the manager tonight to explain to him that I already spend the night making it look like the evening crew isn't lazy and pointless, and that I really don't need to have someone being lazy right in front of me to be able to claim credit for the things I do overnight added in.

On the positive side the department manager seems to be fully aware of what I do. He and I are actually developing a rather good rapport and at least on my side a functional friendship. We share a lot of interests outside work, and have a very similar work ethic at the job. He's a really friendly guy and it's nice to have something to look forward to on the days he comes in on the shift after mine. That morning conversation is a really nice lift after what can be boring and difficult nights. Not to mention having someone appreciate what you do makes it a lot easier to continue doing it.

I hope they listen to you and keep that idiot off of nights. I loathe people who have the ‘it’s not my job’ attitude. hugs
